Celebrating the Musical Legacy of

Mr. Gene Griffin

 

WHEREAS,              The Atlanta City Council is proud to honor Mr. Gene Griffin, an executive talent who has left an indelible mark on the rap and rhythm-and-blues music industry; and

 

WHEREAS,              A native of Columbus, Georgia, who spent much of his childhood up north, Mr. Griffin’s upbringing was heavily influenced by the jazz, blues, and R&B that filled the air around New York’s 7th Avenue, and even as a young man he knew he was destined to make music; and

 

WHEREAS,              Mr. Griffin enjoyed the achievements of his own lyrical hits, including Indeep’s “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life,” yet he also proved his brand in the music industry by managing talents such as Keith Sweat, Boy George, Teddy Riley, and Guy, laying the groundwork for today’s popular hip-hop-laced R&B; and

 

WHEREAS,              Success on his peak label Sound of New York led Mr. Griffin to launching our own city’s electrifying Sound of Atlanta and jumpstarting the careers of artists including Southkak, Confetti, The Professor, Lil Mike, Miracle, and Pastor Troy, the latter of which was picked up by industry tycoon Universal Records due to Sound of Atlanta’s superlative management of these projects; and

 

WHEREAS,              With a career spanning some three decades, Mr. Griffin’s proficiency was legendary, and his music and executive endeavors live on to this very day.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT WE, the members of the Atlanta City Council, on behalf of the citizens of Atlanta, do hereby honor the life and legacy of Mr. Gene Griffin on this 22nd day of January 2019. While we mourn his 2009 passing, we celebrate the tremendous impact this musical and managerial titan has had on countless musicians and fans.
